light Of Day

Empty streets busy with light. A lone stranger passing by,
a cat lost in the dark, an early morning brightened up by a surreal night. In Light of Day it’s impossible to determine what hour of the day you’re living in. Trees catching delicate moonlight while at the same time a midday sun draws harsh shadows over blind walls. First you experience the stillness of a lazy summer evening, one second later you run straight into a bright new day. And in a blink of an eye everything suddenly changes again.

Photographer Jaap Vliegenthart experiments, as he often does in his work, with the visual frameworks of our mind: ‘Most of the time a photo tries to capture a moment in time and I’m always looking for a story or a particular idea.
For a photographer everything feels staged, even when you are shooting real life. You’re searching for those angles that reveal more than what initially meets the eye. I wanted to capture more coincidences and to challenge the preconceived paths of my mind. Therefore, I chose to photograph one place for 24 hours and see how only natural light could shift my point of view. That place happened to be my own neighbourhood. The place I live and have been wandering around every day for half my life. Without even noticing it or giving it a second thought. I was curious about how a street, a window or a steel lamppost can transform in only one day and one night. How does it reveal itself? At what time of day is it at its best? How does darkness and stillness take possession of the bricks I’ve passed so many times without even noticing them for one second? It became a study of light without ever giving up its true secret.’

The result is a magical realism that reveals itself, right at the heart of the city. A conjunction of moments, brought to life with 24 hours of Amsterdam light, in which new layers can be discovered again and again.
